Manual gearboxes don’t attract much attention when it comes to servicing, but they do contain fluid, and that fluid degrades. Gearbox oil lubricates the bearings, gears, and synchromesh components inside the casing, and over time it breaks down, becomes contaminated with metallic particles from normal wear, and loses its ability to protect those components effectively.
Recommended intervals vary between manufacturers and models – some specify a change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, others treat gearbox oil as a lifetime fill. In practice, vehicles used for towing, in hilly terrain, or with a more spirited driving style put additional heat and stress through the gearbox and benefit from more frequent attention.
Using the right fluid is important; manual gearbox oils vary considerably in viscosity and formulation, and the wrong grade can affect gear selection, which is particularly noticeable in cold conditions.
