CVT transmissions – continuously variable transmissions – use a belt or chain running between two variable-width pulleys to deliver smooth, stepless drive. It’s an elegant system when it’s working well, and a frustrating one when it isn’t.
Because CVTs operate on a completely different principle to conventional automatics or manuals, diagnosing them correctly requires specific knowledge, and not every garage has it.
