Manual gearboxes are generally more robust than automatics, but they do fail, and when they do, it’s usually noticeable. Difficulty selecting gears, a vague or loose gearstick, grinding during changes, jumping out of gear under load, or a rumbling noise that varies with speed are all symptoms worth having properly investigated.
Symptoms alone don’t always tell the full story, so our process begins before any dismantling takes place. A road test, visual inspection, and, where relevant, an oil analysis all help to build a picture of what’s happening inside the unit. Where the gearbox needs to come out for further inspection, we’ll give you a full condition report before any repair work is agreed.
Manual gearboxes can often be repaired rather than replaced – a synchro ring or bearing is a very different job to a full unit swap – and we’ll always advise the most cost-effective route that properly resolves the problem.
