CVT transmissions depend heavily on their fluid. The belt-and-pulley system operates under significant friction and load, and the fluid – often a specifically formulated CVTF – plays a critical role in protecting those components and maintaining the transmission’s performance characteristics.
Neglecting CVT fluid is a common cause of premature transmission wear. As the fluid degrades, its protective properties diminish, and the subtle clamping forces that control ratio changes become less precise, leading to slipping, shuddering, and eventually more serious damage.
Manufacturer recommendations vary. Some CVTs call for fluid changes at defined intervals; others are nominally sealed but still benefit from proactive servicing. We’ll advise on what’s appropriate for your particular model and usage, and we always use the correct fluid grade.
